What are Face Masks?

What Are Face Masks Anyway?

Think of face masks as the ‘deep conditioners’ of the face. They are the perfect treatment for your skin concerns and there’s quite literally a mask for everything! The right face mask can detoxify, increase circulation and moisturize your skin. Face masks are for those times when your skin needs that ‘pick me up’ just like you would with a deep condition treatment for your hair. Face masks penetrate the skin layers to repair from the inside out.

Types of Face Masks

As with everything in the beauty world, there are so many types of face masks (just to make things complicated lol). The main types are

Clay Masks– usually contain natural clays that deeply detoxify and draw out excess oils and impurities. Excellent choice for oily skin. A good example is the BodyShop Himalayan Charcoal Face Mask

Sheet Masks– sheets that that pre-soaked in serum. These are excellent for moisturising and good for all skin types but especially dry skin. An example is the Garnier Moisture Bomb Tissue Mask & Sephora Sheet Masks. More of Sheet Masks in my previous post here

Hydrating Masks- excellent for dry skin. They soften the skin and add moisture and hydration. Popular example is Glam Glow Thirst Mud.

Exfoliating/Acid based masks– these masks have AHA/BHA or some form of acids that help to exfoliate the skin. Excellent choice for blemished skin, enlarged pores and treating hyperpigmentation. Examples are Nip + Fab Glycolic Fix Mask and Mary Kay Radiance Peel. More on AHA/BHA here

And much more! There are lots more types of face masks out there and something for every skin type even sensitive skin.

How to Pick the Right Face Mask?

Picking the right face mask is key to reaping all the benefits and taking your skincare game an extra step! It’s important to know what your skin type is and which skin concern you want to target. Knowing these two points will help you save both time & money because you are picking the perfect masks that will work for your skin.

For instance, I love using Clay Masks & Acid Based masks. I don’t really reach for hydrating/Moisturising masks as my skin doesn’t really need that.

Face Masks Hacks & Tips

Ready for a face mask? I have a few tips for you!

  • Use face masks 2-3 times a week to keep your skin in top condition and a chance to relax
  • Watch that clock! A 10 min face mask doesn’t need 20 mins! It will do no good
  • Apply face masks with a brush! it spreads easily and less messy PLUS lets you feel like a total pro
  • So you have an extra active oily T zone but dry cheeks? No problem! Try multi-masking and use 2 to 3 masks at the same damn time! All about multi-masking here
  • Try a sheet mask, they are fun

That’s all folks! I hope you found this post useful and you try some of my recommendations, make sure you shout if you do!
