ORS Black Olive Oil Repair 7 Shampoo Review

ORS released the Black Olive oil collection back in 2016 but I haven’t heard much about it. I was gifted the collection back then and I have only come round to using it (smh). The Black Olive Oil collection has a shampoo, conditioner and oil elixir and features their trademarked repair 7 formula. This post is a full review on the shampoo.

ORS Black Olive Oil Repair 7 Shampoo is a sulfate free shampoo and promises to cleanse and strengthen all hair textures. The 7 benefits are thermal protection, shine, frizz control, anti breakage, strengthens, reconstructs and adds body.

Experience

I have been using the shampoo since December 2018 and I have just a little left for 2 or 3 wash days. The shampoo comes in a big 370ml bottle which will last ages. Although it’s a sulfate free shampoo, this lathers up really well with a small amount. This shampoo looks like it has some shimmer in it although there is no shimmer in my hair. The shampoo and infact the whole collection smells absolutely amazing.

I really love this shampoo for my 4c natural hair because I find it gently cleanses my hair and scalp without stripping it off moisture. Infact, my hair feels very soft no matter how dry my hair is going into that washday. The lather this shampoo produces is very good for finger detangling so I always finger detangle before detangling further with a wide tooth comb and conditioner.

As for the 7 benefits, I do not use heat on my hair so I can’t comment on thermal protection. My hair doesn’t look any shinier, I don’t have frizzy hair and I’m not sure if it adds body because I have natural hair that shrinks in contact with water. As for anti-breakage, I can say it does reduce breakage during the shampooing process.

Verdict

The shampoo promises to be for all hair textures and I can say it really works well on my natural 4c hair and on my wigs.  I really love this shampoo because it’s great for finger detangling, softens my hair and you only really need a small amount. It has effective cleansing power without over stripping the hair.

I will bring you reviews on the conditioner as well.

I haven’t seen these in store but if you do come across them I definitely recommend!

ORS Scalp & Wellness Oils- Extra Virgin Olive Oil

ors scalp and wellness oils

ORS released the Scalp & Wellness Oils range last year which has 10 oils in total for healthy hair and scalp. I received the Extra Virgin Olive Oil last year which I have been using and I can finally bring you a full review!

The full range of oils are

  1. ORS Hair & Scalp Wellness Oils – Castor Oil
  2. ORS Hair & Scalp Wellness Oils – Argan Oil
  3. ORS Hair & Scalp Wellness Oils – Indian Amla Oil
  4. ORS Hair & Scalp Wellness Oils – Black Seed Oil
  5. ORS Hair & Scalp Wellness Oils – Coconut Oil
  6. ORS Hair & Scalp Wellness Oils – Jojoba Oil
  7. ORS Hair & Scalp Wellness Oils – Tea Tree Oil
  8. ORS Hair & Scalp Wellness Oils – Virgin Olive Oil
  9. ORS Hair & Scalp Wellness Oils – Saw Palmetto
  10. ORS Hair & Scalp Wellness Oils – Shea Butter Oil

The Extra Virgin Olive Oil is perfect for adding extra moisture to dry thirsty hair. They recommend you use it as a pre-poo treatment before shampooing.

Ingredients

In addition to Olive Oil, I noticed it also has sweet almond and corn oil, both of which have great benefits for hair. It has a lot of added parfums in the ingredients which make sense because the oil has a very strong sweet floral scent to it (it doesn’t smell like olive oil to me). It also has a few colouring dyes in it and Vitamin E.

Thoughts

I have been using this as a pre poo oil for a while now and I really like it. After applying it, I wrap my hair with cling film and let it sit for 15 to 20 mins before cleansing. It works really well to soften my hair prior shampooing (many times I have use it on extra dry thirsty hair). Throughout the cleansing process, my hair remains soft and I still smell the oil  afterwards (sometimes).

Verdict– it’s a great pre poo treatment and the 90ml bottle lasts a while even though it looks small! I definitely recommend it.

ORS Scalp & Wellness Olive Oil is priced at £4.99 at Boots

September monthly products

Hey wonderful people! This is a list of stuff I got over September. I will have reviews up soon. Let me know if you have used any of these products or recommend some new ones to me! I am always on the hunt for something new to try J

I used lemon juice (Yes guys lemon juice) as a toner for a while, to help brighten my skin and help with my hyperpigmentation. It worked but I got bored of using it and wanted to try something new. I decided to pick up the Nivea pure and natural toner 0.33p (yes lol, but it’s been discontinued that’s why it’s so cheap) from Superdrug. Not a great fan of the smell but it gets the job done.

Garnier has always been my go to brand for skin care! I picked up their pure active anti-blackhead deep pore wash, £1.75 (a mouthful right?). This has salicylic acid which is known for its anti-blemish/breakout properties. I’m loving the results already.

ORS curls unleashed sulfate free shampoo and rinse out conditioner. I went to the ORS event during the Vogue Fashion night out and got these two baddies in my goody bag. A full review will be up soon on BrownBeautyTalk but one thing I have to say now is: I LOVE the SMELL! Lol. Check out my product collections series for the full product list for curls unleashed.

Superdrug body spray, £0.99. I love getting these and throwing them in my hand bag to use throughout the day. It smells really good and lasts all day.

Small stippling brush, £1.50 from Primark. I have been looking for a small stippling brush for a while now and I randomly saw this in Primark and got it! (I didn’t know they sold brushes). I really like it, I use it to apply my highlighters or use to blend my under-eye concealer.

Beauty UK gel fix nail polish £1 each, from Superdrug (please check my Facebook page for a lot of nail colour swatches)

Barry M nail paint, buy one get one half price, £2.99 each

Dermalogica products, separate post coming soon, I went to their event launch for these products yesterday

And finally my notebook, I got these to write my ideas, stories etc down as well as to plan my blog posts. Got it covered by CJAJ09, check her out on Facebook

That’s all the products I got this month, why not share yours with me

I don’t think we need a video on the other 3.

CONDITIONERS SERIES: DEEP CONDITIONERS

deep conditioners

Hey family, I hope everyone is doing great so far.

I am starting a series on the different types of conditioners and its importance (seeing that I get asked this question a lot) and I will round up by recommending some of my favourite conditioners for you guys. I will try and add ones I have personally used and cater for every budget. For my DIY lovers, I will also get some recipes for you. So how does that sound? Good right? Let’s get started. Today we will be talking about deep conditioners

WHAT IS A DEEP CONDITIONER/ DEEP CONDITIONING

Deep conditioning is using a deep conditioner to deep condition the hair (Lool, don’t you hate explanations like this? Don’t worry, I won’t do that to you guys). Deep conditioning is the process of adding back nutrients to your hair that may have been lost during excess styling, other hair products or even the weather.

It is very important you incorporate this into your regime, preferably deep conditioning weekly to add those nutrients back to your hair and strengthen it. You will see a major difference after 3-6 weeks of use. Your hair will be much healthier, shiner with less dryness and breakage!

TYPES OF DEEP CONDITIONERS

So, now that you want to deep condition your hair, which ones should you look out for and how to choose the best type. You may also see deep conditioners as ‘treatments’ which is what they are essentially, you can use them to treat a specific hair problem.  You may also see them as masques. As a rule of thumb, I always say to have two main types: a moisture based deep conditioner and a protein based deep conditioner then you can alternate between the two depending on what your hair needs.

A moisture based deep conditioner will mainly be for dry hair. This type of product will work to add moisture back to your hair.

A protein based deep conditioner is for damaged hair that is either breaking or shedding a lot. The proteins in the conditioner will strengthen the hair and help with the shedding/breakage.

If your hair is both dry and damaged then you will obviously need a conditioner that will take care of both problems. It is important to notice that most deep conditioners on the market targets both dry and damaged hair. Where possible, try to get moisture based and protein based separately just in case you need one more than the other.

NOW LET’S TALK EXAMPLES

These are some of my personal favourites with ones I am yet to try. If I have a review here on my blog, I link them for you.  I will also try and leave links to where you can get them from online.

Moisture based deep conditioners

  1. Beautiful Textures Intense moisture rapid repair deep conditioner. This is a moisture based deep conditioner enriched with aloe vera, coconut, olive, soy, argan oil, shea and mango butter! I have personally used this and testify on how soft my hair felt after. I like the smell too. Its £3.99 from BeautyByZara. Link > http://www.beautybyzara.com/beautiful-textures-rapid-repair-deep-conditioner-15oz/#

2. Soft and Beautiful Botanicals ultra nourishing deep conditioning repair masque. It contains nutrients like shea butter, olive, argan, coconut oil, aloe and vitamin E. I love LOVE the smell of this and it has a thicker consistency. This is another favourite of mine. Try to get this in store, any good BSS should have it. I personally got mine from ACE in Croydon for £2.99. it looks every expensive online

3. Motions Deep conditioning masque. Another great product with great added ingredients. I have a review on my blog for this. Check it out by clicking on this link>> http://wp.me/p1uQOd-tc

4. NuNAAT creams garlic and Cupuacu total strength and repair. This will double up as a moisture and light protein treatment given that is helps to strengthen and repair split ends. I have recently used this product and I am loving the results. I definitely recommend this!

Other great ones that I haven’t used will be (These can also double up as deep conditioners that strengthen the hair and reduces breakage)

Design Essentials Coconut and Monoi deep moisture oil treatment with great added nutrients like argan oil and sunflower. Its £8.95 from British Curlies. Link > http://shop.britishcurlies.co.uk/design-essentials-coconut-monoi-deep-moisture-oil-treatment-4oz/

Crème Of Nature Argan Oil Intensive Conditioning treatment. I really love this line from Crème of Nature so I have no doubts this will do the trick. Its £3.99 from British Curlies as well. Link >> http://shop.britishcurlies.co.uk/creme-of-nature-argan-oil-intensive-conditioning-treatment-354ml/

Protein based deep conditioners

It’s worth noting some of these will be marketed as reconstructors. So don’t be afraid when you see reconstructor on the packet. Probably the most common example I can give you is hair mayonnaise.

  1. ORS hair mayonnaise. Who hasn’t used this before? It’s a really good treatment that helps to strengthen the hair. You can get this at almost EVERY BSS (If your local BSS don’t have this stop going there lol). It is enriched with olive oil and egg protein. Prices start from £2.29 for the small tub from BeautyByZara. Link > http://www.beautybyzara.com/ors-hair-mayonnaise-8oz/

2. Aussie 3 min miracle reconstructor- the smell is everything. I love everything about this little product. Its £4.99 from Boots. Link > http://www.boots.com/en/Aussie-3-Minute-Miracle-Reconstructor-Conditioner-250ml-_1074/

Ones I haven’t used yet

ApHogee keratin 2 min hair reconstructor. It is a one-step ‘milder’ version of their two step protein treatment. I haven’t used this yet but I have heard great reviews on it. I have included a video I found really helpful on it below. Be sure to check it out and do more research if you are interested in buying this. You can purchase on Amazon by clicking Aphogee Keratin 2 Minute Hair Reconstructor. Its £8.25.

ApHogee two step protein treatment. This is a hard-core protein treatment and it’s only recommended you use every 6-8 weeks I think. Again I haven’t used it before but I am planning to soon. I have included a video link before and you can purchase on Amazon by clicking Aphogee Balancing Moisturizer with Two Stp Protein Treatment. It’s £12.03 for both the protein and the balancing moisturiser. It usually come in this pack of 2 but you can also get them separately

FOR MY DIY LOVERS

You will find lots of ingredients in your kitchen cabinet/fridge that can be used for the perfect deep conditioner. I have tried a few recipes but you can always swap and test new ones! Do let me know what your favourite mixes are as well.

The ones I have personal tried are

Mayo, egg and honey

Greek yoghurt, simple conditioner, castor oil and olive oil

Simple conditioner, egg and any oil I can find: coconut oil, castor oil, spearmint essential oil etc

Of course you have the more popular ones like

Banana, olive oil and honey

Avocado, olive oil and shea butter (Sound good, I think I will be trying this soon)

Olive oil/ coconut milk

Of course you don’t have to stick to these recipes or get the exact measurements, I always just eye ball and use more (It’s never the bad thing lol). Mix and match till you get your perfect deep conditioner. There are COUNTLESS of videos on YouTube on DIY recipes so be sure to have a look if you are really stuck for ideas

HOW TO?

This is fairly easy. After shampooing, apply your deep conditioner of choice to your hair and leave for about 30 mins. It works well with heat so cover with a plastic cap and sit under a dryer. If you don’t have this at home you can always use a handheld blow dryer. Alternatively what I do is pile on plastic bags and go about my day. Your body heat is enough to do the trick. You can also put a heated towel on top of the plastic bag for added heat. That’s it!

FINAL THOUGHTS/ RECAP

Deep conditioners are a must in your regime especially if you use a lot of styling products. There are two main types: moisture based and protein based. Although you can get some formulas that have both properties try your best to get them separately.

Try to do them weekly but if you do a hard core protein treatment, do that every 6 to 8 weeks.

Don’t be afraid if you can get one in store, the kitchen is always the next best thing. Let your inner DIY diva out and get to mixing!

That’s all folks. If you love this post please subscribe for more. Also, don’t forget to connect with me on my social media and like my new Facebook page! You can find all the links on the right on side of this page. I will be continuing my series on conditioners by talking about leave in conditioners next time. Until then,

Love

Sarah

MAY MONTHLY PRODUCTS

20150524_215441

Hi everyone!

I wanted to do a post quickly about the products I have purchased and been using this month. It looks like a lot of products but I only bought a handful, the others I got from the events I have been to – these are mostly the sample size products. Most of the makeup I was given too. I will leave links if I have done a review on it or quickly do a mini review if I have used it.

Let’s get started. First I should confess I am a product junkie, so the amount of products should not come as a shock. Personally I don’t think it’s a lot. (Lol). I am going to try and do this top to bottom (lol) and put prices where I remember them

Ultimate organics extra virgin olive oil body whip- top green tub. I love this product! I was drawn to it because of the texture and consistency of it. It’s not runny as a lotion but it’s not ‘hard’ as a cream product either. It’s more like a yoghurt constituency. The smell is good too and the price is £2.19 (if I can remember oh wait the price tag is still on). My only con is it can be a bit greasy.

Silver top white tub (lol, guys you’re in for some amazing descriptions but as long as you get the picture I’m good)- this was part of a set given to me by fashion fair from the Curlvolution event! (Missed out on the event? Check out my event cover by clicking here >> http://wp.me/p1uQOd-ti) It has a lavender scent is which lovely but a bit strong for me so of course my mother grabs it for herself. It is a moisturising body butter

Oil next to body butter on the right- again part of the gift set from fashion fair.  It’s the calming lavender moisturising oil. I really like how it feels on my skin. It leaves it silky soft and moisturised without been too oily. I use this on my legs and arms when they are out (nobody wants ashy legs) and also on my heels when am wearing sandals (most embarrassing thing ever- dry heels! Combat this my using an oil regularly on the area maybe 3 days before hand or every day when you’re applying your body moisturiser- ever notice how easy it is to forget that part? This oil works fine so does coconut oil. Shea butter is great too if you have that. Of course make sure you are using your scrubbing stones to get rid of dead skin)

Body shop vitamin E face spray- pink bottle. I LOVE THIS. Moisture boost and sets makeup! I was looking for a makeup setting spray that I could use for travelling so it had to be smaller than my fix plus from Mac (I love this too). I got this after speaking to the shop assistant who recommended the orange vitamin c spray (£10) which gives a dewy finish which was what I was after. However I did not like the scent of that and went ahead with this instead and I am so happy with my choice. I won’t say the finish is dewy but it does get rid of the powder effect (lol) and gives a subtle glow! Well worth the money. I use this alone too or on top of my vitamin E moisturiser (pictured next to the sachet next to the eco styler gel lmao). Grab from body shop for just £8.

Olive oil ecostyler gel- of course every naturalista needs this! I have tried the clear and argan oil versions so it only made sense to get this one! I have this thing and I’m sure a lot of people do, where I have to try all flavours if the product comes in different flavours (is It sad or weird?) I do this a lot with shower gels and chewing gums. I think the price was £2.69 or £2.99 from diva hair and beauty Croydon

Naturally simple haircare moisture cleanse shampoo (green sachet)

Beautiful textures texture manageability system- I got about 5 boxes of this at the Curlvolution event. It is supposed to help you straighten your hair and keep if straight for a while (even after shampooing) before going back to curly. I have already given 2 away and I think I will give the others as well- I am a heat free journey. I am not sure how it works but I read somewhere the ingredients is not the best. But if this is something you want to try out by all means go for it.

Video on TMS

Two motions products (Gold tubs) reviews can be found here > Pre-wash detangling butter >> http://wp.me/p1uQOd-t7 .Deep conditioning masque >> http://wp.me/p1uQOd-tc

Beautiful textures rapid repaid deep conditioner- I have used this before (years back) and recently fell in love with this line again so stay tuned for this review

Clay sachets- rhassoul clay (review here >> http://wp.me/p1uQOd-us) and bentonite clay bought from SheaButter cottage.

Superdrug vitamin E micellar cleansing water (next to clay sachets) – I LOVE THIS. GO BUY NOW lol. Ok so how I got this this. Wendy Williams (how you doing) spoke highly about the simple’s version (skincare brand) and how effective it was taking off ALL her makeup. I was like whattt? You’re on T.V of course it’s a lot more makeup and it was THAT effective? Hm! *walks into Superdrug picks it up* but I’m like let me try a cheaper version in case it does not work. The simple version is not expensive, about £5 but I would have been pissed to spend that on a product and not work. Luckily the Superdrug brand products were on offer- buy one get one ½ price, so I decided to go with that. I bought it on a day I had makeup on so of course I couldn’t wait to get home and try this. It also claims to take of mascara! Hmm! Did it work? YESSSSS. I swear! One cotton pad is enough to take off your mascara! If you know me you know I like to use two to three different mascaras (lol) to get max length and volume. One pad is enough! I use one pad for each eye then use about 3 more for my face! After that I used a baby wipe to double check if all my makeup is gone and yep! Wipe was as clean as I first removed it. Lol. Next day no panda eyes! In short I am repurchasing lol and can’t wait to try other brands! Oh don’t use it to wipe your lips- it tastes horrid

L’Oréal Miss manga mascara- £8.99. It’s okay. It was really hyped up on YouTube but its ok. I have a better mascara from Superdrug for £3 that works wonders! Yes I need to re purchase and will include it in June’s products.

Video on Miss Manga mascara

You be-natural sachet (on top)

Palmer’s shea formula sachets- I didn’t know they had a natural hair care line. I got the moisture shampoo and conditioner and the curls whipped cream.

Fashion fair lipsticks, eye quad and pink blush (All dark brown packaging) given to me at Curlvolution

Phew, coming to the last few, right quickly now

Curls unleashed sample pack in the left corner- contains set it off curl boosting jelly, curl defining crème and moisturizing conditioner

Maybelline’s big lash mascara- oldie but goodie

And finally ApHogee provitamin spray leave in conditioner- I like this. It smells ok and leaves my hair refreshed.

That’s it folks! The end of all the products I bought and used in May. I know it’s June but I have a great excuse- I went traveling and you’re in for a travel update soon! Yay! Leave any comments on any products you have tried or wanting to try- hashtag #sarahfynn #productjunkie! I guess my favourites would be the micellar cleansing water and the Miss Manga mascara.

Until next time,

Love Sarah

CURLVOLUTION 2015- EVENT COVER

Hey family!! I hope all is well with you guys! Grab a snack because this is going to be a looonnggg one! This post will be the official (in my world lol) event cover for CURLVOLUTION 2015! Sit back, relax and enjoy the post!

In its 4th year running, Curlvolution is a natural hair show aimed at the natural hair community to inform, inspire and educate. This year’s show was at the Hilton, Canary Wharf (great location btw) and was jam packed with workshops, vendors, amazing people and volunteers like me (lool). Yes I decided to volunteer for the show because wanted to be part of the show, network and of course for the blog. I am so glad I did because the event was a success! I met some amazing people and had the chance to meet some of my fav bloggers! And of course the product junkie in me was very happy to get some very amazing samples to try out!

DSCF2130

So the day started really early for me, volunteer debrief meeting at 9am (FAM it’s not a joke) after which we got some breakfast and proceeded with our duties! I was on vendor assistance so I went on my merry way to offer my assistance. I met the owner of Shea butter cottage (who is Ghanaian btw #teamGhana) spoke some Twi (lol) and carried on meeting other vendors. About an hour later, the place was packed with beautiful displays from lots of vendors. Hunty!, the products available on the day were everything! I mean it was product junkie heaven! Brands like ORS, Beautiful Textures and Big Hair. You also had beauty by Zara which stocks popular US brands e.g. tgin (I am soo bummed I didn’t get anything from the line!), Shea Moisture etc (torture ended). Have a look for yourself

DSCF2007

The day began for the guests in the main hall, with the main introduction show hosted by Action Jackson (hilarious btw, mantra of the day: I am beautiful, I am amazing, and I am good to go! Check out his motivational book on Amazon). Then Connie Jackson, brand manager of Fashion Fair was next and spoke about fashion fair makeup, its history and the struggles of black people in the industry. You know what’s shocking is that even in 2015, it’s still difficult to get the correct shade of foundation in my shade bearing in mind I’m not too dark or light.  You also had Felicia Leatherwood from Beautiful textures speak and did a live styling demo on stage! What I loved about this was the fact that she used girls with different hair types and UK natural hair stylists (btw I am thinking of tracking down UK natural hair salons and sharing my experiences, let me know if you will find this useful). After this there were vendor announcements talking about their brands etc then it was shopping time! I loved the interaction between vendors and customers and I was lucky enough to catch a few ‘in the moment snaps’

So whilst there was browsing and shopping in the main corridor, the different workshops were taking place. There were a lot on the day and I didn’t get to sit in that many (L, why there isn’t technology to split yourself into 3 parts, I am not sure!). I caught the end of Action Jackson’s Phenomenal You workshop.  From my understanding it was a motivational workshop to inspire and education the girls. I also caught some of his advice to the ladies e.g. don’t say negative words to yourself e.g. I’m tired or I’m broke (what type of brokenness? If you don’t define it, your brain will take it as broke in your spirit, finances etc). I sat in the business of blogging workshop presented by Pelumi (from cfyh) and Laila (fusion of cultures). It was very informative and dealt with basics such as branding, building an audience and finding your niche. The ladies looked amazing as usual and were very interactive with the audience. This workshop was sold out guys! A few snippets from the workshop

I also sat in the Jenell Stewart workshop- being natural isn’t easy but you can survive. She gave some practical and simple advice on how to care for and simplify your hair routines. Most of her advice I know now anyway but wish it came earlier because I learnt a lot from trial and error (oh! Those stressful, painful times!) It was a very fun and interactive workshop with questions at the end. Other workshops that took place but didn’t get to sit in were beauty masterclass presented by Kluermoi (I got a few pictures from my other volunteers) , Hair loss clinic and divas kitchen presented by Mane Divas and Felicia Leatherwood presented hair care and styling (bummer! I didn’t go to this- I am trying to be more creative in styling my hair). So around 4pm, everyone headed back to the main hall for the panel discussion with Bianca Miller from BBC Apprentice joined by all the other ladies from before. The topic was 50 shades of brown and mostly dealt with the issues us women of colour face- makeup, hair products etc. it’s really sad to see in 2015 (I wish I could make that capitals) some big brands either don’t want to attract black people (so don’t make products specifically for us but are happy to take our money #getfashionfairintoboots) or don’t carry enough dark shades. Check out Bianca’s nude tights for black women online ( I couldn’t find a direct link but follow her on twitter or google her name for more information) I couldn’t record the talk because I was on mic duty lol but it was a good talk I only wished it lasted a bit longer.
