The Intern Diaries: Day 9

Dear Diary

Today was manic! It was really busy at work, I kind of understand why it takes a company/business a while to reply or call back a customer, sometimes. There’s a bunch of things to do and different things needing you attention sometimes things can get forgotten.

Anyway, you will never guess what brand is coming out with a hair care line for natural hair! Can’t say so now but it will be exiting once it comes out! See part of the reason why I love this job is getting to know products even before they come out in stores.

Tomorrow is the big one: my review! I welcome any positive or negative feedback I will get so I can work on it for the future. I will make sure to use my waterproof mascara since am such a big baby and cry easily lool.

So yesterday, I did a post on a conservation I overheard between a hairdresser and another man. Check it out by clicking here >> http://wp.me/p1uQOd-LV  . Anyway it was just debunking some myths about natural hair. So today we were talking about it and as it turns out they know the hairdresser. They explained to me that he says most of his natural hair clients are coming back and relaxing/texlaxing their hair because they are not quite getting their hair how they like it: in terms of the ‘perfect curl’ or making their hair soft etc. they find they get frustrated and give up hence they go back to relaxing. And it’s expensive because they spend a lot of money searching for products that work for their hair. This got me thinking as usual on the way home.. Watch this space!

I’m really looking forward to tomorrow and of course I will report back to you what happens but for now I am off to eat and sleep!

Fingers crossed

Love Sarah

P.S- I made that salon appointment! As part of my salon series I will be visiting natural hair salons and sharing my experience with you

I was able to get some new products to review: check my Instagram for the latest products and what to watch out for

I ordered some nail decorations, why it isn’t here yet lol! I can’t wait to do my nails ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Be hopeful, tomorrow is a new start! xx

The Intern Diaries: Day 3

Dear Diary

It seems the hours at work go by so quick! I woke up today with a ‘new attitude’ basically I thought a lot about what she told me ‘you have to write it to fit in with the voice of the magazine, not informal not colloquial but not too formal or professional’ hmm.

So I woke up thinking ‘ok, maybe I am approaching this wrong, I will try and approach it like I do with my blog, because my blog is really informal as well as new ideas I had for the social media updates. It was like I woke up on the right side of the bed! I felt like super woman because I was finally able to do that post office morning run before work I have been putting off since Saturday lol.

I got to the office right on time too. Worked through my tasks as quickly and efficiently as I could because I knew I had that ‘big’ stylist mini telephone interview I was looking forward to. But after 2 rings, he didn’t pick up (But he said I should call today lool), anyway the other stylist picked up, yay!

So the time came to hand in interview questions for another person, bracing myself for feedback, still not good enough. Hmm. ‘The voice is still not quite there’. Hmm ‘re work it’.

The ideas for the social media updates were received well though, so that’s good.

After work, I made my way to the colour excellence event in London, which I was really looking forward to. You will catch the cover soon on the blog. 2 more events tomorrow and I think I am done for this week.

Off to bed now, I will try to do another post office run in the morning ( my ebay items are selling well),

Day 3 was good. I’m still trying to find the voice of the magazine and write according to that. I think the other elements of the internship are going great though. I need to work on my writing skills. I have had no ‘formal’ training in regards to writing skills, it’s just a passion I have that I am trying to develop. I think this is where been flexible comes in but as long as I am writing about stuff I am passionate and interested in, I should be fine? Anyway

Anyway off to dream land now

Love

Sarah

P.S- my book came, although I am currently into another book, Americanah, its really good.

I hope this stylist picks up his phone tomorrow lol.

Let’s try another approach with this voice thing, I mean I thought I knew which is why I decided to contact them regarding the internship.

And weird or is it just me- why do they keep saying ‘thanks for coming in? Thanks for the help’ am I supposed to quit by now? Is that what other people did? She did say they have made some previous interns cry before. I mean the criticism is harsh but I try not to take it personal because if this is the industry I truly want to work in then I want to put in my 10,000 hours now, I want to refine my skills so much that when I move unto my next role, I will be in a better position. They said I am eager though and I thought trust me, you have no idea.

Is there some truth to the Devil wears prada movie? Actually, I may need to read that book too.

Anyway, need some food and some sleep.

Hey guys, so I have an internship at a top UK magazine for the next 2 weeks and I will be documenting the journey in my intern diaries! I won’t reveal where/who I am working for (maybe I will at the end? Or if you can guess lol, a giveaway?). Just know it’s an editorial assistant internship and I am not making tea/coffee lol.

I hope this inspires someone who is thinking of a similar internship to get out there and apply. It can be quite daunting and there is always that ‘Will I just be making drinks and doing the photocopying’ cliché. But internships are great especially if you are thinking of a career change- which I am currently thinking of and want to test drive to see if it’s actually the right path for you plus you’re getting some experience and making contacts. And if you’re amazing enough and they can afford it- your dream job

The Intern Diaries: Day 1

Dear diary

Today was the first day of my highly anticipated internship! The dull weather and train delays could not stop my excitement as I got ready for work. Who coined the phrase smart causal? I mean why would I want to be causal about my smartness? Is it that my makeup is casual but outfit is smart or vice versa? (If you know me, you know I hate the term smart causal!)

Anyway, I learnt a lot today. Like good ideas don’t quite cut it- it has to fit the brand’s image/house style. I mean coming from a blogging background, where I have total freedom/control on what/how/when I post to the complete opposite was a bit of a shock ( maybe I am quite naïve?) how to get specific answers for your interview questions, how many times did I re draft that list? Yes 3 times (maybe that online journalism course will come in handy?) etc. No free advertising, not even by mistake (Wait what?)

I got some products for a test run. Looking forward to using them! A review will be on my blog after it has been posted on the mag’s website/blog.

But day 1 was good. Looking forward to day 2. Now I know what my day will be like more or less.

Love Sarah

P.S- you guys need to help with my outfits and I need to buy that book on creative writing/thinking. What is an SEO? Either way, blogging has been my 10,000 hours so to say
