The Intern Diaries: D Day!

Dear Diary

So today was the last day! I think I was a bit emotional because I was feeling down in the 1st part of the day. I started the day per usual, getting on with my tasks and chasing up people. At about 4pm I was asked to take a break for my progress review………….

And it went great! We discussed both the highs and lows and how I could improve for the future. it actually went SO much better than I thought!

And guess what?!

I am staying for an extra week!!!! And after that it depends on whether I would like to carry on or not! I am SO HAPPY lol.

The past 2 weeks have been hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm anyway I have a bunch of things to catch up on so I gotta goo..

This marks the end of my intern diaries. I will not be posting anymore entries as you guys already got the hang of what I do. From here on we will go back to good old hair/beauty posts, and I have a good one coming for you soon! Thank you guys for coming along on this journey with me and I hope this inspired someone to go for internships if they have been thinking about it. It’s really what you put into it that counts and making sure you leave a good impression on them. So it’s not officially your job but if you wow them enough chances are they will either give you a really good reference or they may move things about and offer you the job! Either way go in positive and hopeful!

I have been working at Black Beauty and Hair Magazine for the last two weeks and its set to continue! Oh why, it’s only UK’s no1 bestselling magazine for women of colour. You know, no biggie LOL. Just a small dream of mine coming true. Nothing to write home about. I mean come on LOL

Love

Sarah

P.S- my nail decorations came and they are CUTE!! Keep an eye out on my Facebook as I will be bombarding you with pictures!

Weekend routine? Wash day, laundry, cook, study and job applications urgh

Smile, Heaven is watching xx

The Intern Diaries: Day 6

Dear Diary

It’s the start of the final week! Today was a great day.

I didn’t do a lot today, just a few bits from last week I had to catch up on.

I overheard a convo that got me thinking about what hairdressers themselves think of natural hair, anyway watch out for a long post on that.

Anyway preparing for tomorrow, heading off to bed now

Love

Sarah

P.S- I NEED to go to post office TOMORROW

The Intern Diaries: Day 5

Dear Diary

It’s the end of week 1!

Happy Friday

Today was another win for me! More work and no re works hmm! I am so pleased! I almost don’t want it to end and would LOVE to carry on working for them

I also secured a few contacts for my future collabs (yay)

Anyway its been a great week, and I am looking forward to next week! I am retiring to bed now

Love

Sarah

P.S- I finished Americanah, you have to pick it up! Its really good! Starting on this new book the tipping point by Maxwell Gladwell, I love his books!

I didn’t go to the post office today lol

Night night now

Hey guys, so I have an internship at a top UK magazine for the next 2 weeks and I will be documenting the journey in my intern diaries! I won’t reveal where/who I am working for (maybe I will at the end? Or if you can guess lol, a giveaway?). Just know it’s an editorial assistant internship and I am not making tea/coffee lol.

I hope this inspires someone who is thinking of a similar internship to get out there and apply. It can be quite daunting and there is always that ‘Will I just be making drinks and doing the photocopying’ cliché. But internships are great especially if you are thinking of a career change- which I am currently thinking of and want to test drive to see if it’s actually the right path for you plus you’re getting some experience and making contacts. And if you’re amazing enough and they can afford it- your dream job

The Intern Diaries: Day 3

Dear Diary

It seems the hours at work go by so quick! I woke up today with a ‘new attitude’ basically I thought a lot about what she told me ‘you have to write it to fit in with the voice of the magazine, not informal not colloquial but not too formal or professional’ hmm.

So I woke up thinking ‘ok, maybe I am approaching this wrong, I will try and approach it like I do with my blog, because my blog is really informal as well as new ideas I had for the social media updates. It was like I woke up on the right side of the bed! I felt like super woman because I was finally able to do that post office morning run before work I have been putting off since Saturday lol.

I got to the office right on time too. Worked through my tasks as quickly and efficiently as I could because I knew I had that ‘big’ stylist mini telephone interview I was looking forward to. But after 2 rings, he didn’t pick up (But he said I should call today lool), anyway the other stylist picked up, yay!

So the time came to hand in interview questions for another person, bracing myself for feedback, still not good enough. Hmm. ‘The voice is still not quite there’. Hmm ‘re work it’.

The ideas for the social media updates were received well though, so that’s good.

After work, I made my way to the colour excellence event in London, which I was really looking forward to. You will catch the cover soon on the blog. 2 more events tomorrow and I think I am done for this week.

Off to bed now, I will try to do another post office run in the morning ( my ebay items are selling well),

Day 3 was good. I’m still trying to find the voice of the magazine and write according to that. I think the other elements of the internship are going great though. I need to work on my writing skills. I have had no ‘formal’ training in regards to writing skills, it’s just a passion I have that I am trying to develop. I think this is where been flexible comes in but as long as I am writing about stuff I am passionate and interested in, I should be fine? Anyway

Anyway off to dream land now

Sarah

P.S- my book came, although I am currently into another book, Americanah, its really good.

I hope this stylist picks up his phone tomorrow lol.

Let’s try another approach with this voice thing, I mean I thought I knew which is why I decided to contact them regarding the internship.

And weird or is it just me- why do they keep saying ‘thanks for coming in? Thanks for the help’ am I supposed to quit by now? Is that what other people did? She did say they have made some previous interns cry before. I mean the criticism is harsh but I try not to take it personal because if this is the industry I truly want to work in then I want to put in my 10,000 hours now, I want to refine my skills so much that when I move unto my next role, I will be in a better position. They said I am eager though and I thought trust me, you have no idea.

Is there some truth to the Devil wears prada movie? Actually, I may need to read that book too.

Anyway, need some food and some sleep.

The Intern Diaries: Day 2

Dear Diary

Its day 2! It was packed with more work and more responsibility! So what did I learn today? A lot! I am still getting to grips with the magazine’s writing style/voice but I think I am getting better as I only had to re word some documents twice!- that’s good, right?

Anyway, I am excited about my mini interview with a high profile stylist for the magazine yay tomorrow.

Also I need to start applying for jobs as I know I won’t be getting a job there after. I mean was I naïve to think this could lead to a permanent role? She did say it was a small team with a strict budget so I know that possibility is out the door! hmmmm Anyway let’s see what happens next.

Day 2 was good.

Sarah

P.S – how do you guys deal with constructive criticism? I need to start waking up a bit earlier! I wasn’t late but I need to do a post office run in the morning tomorrow
