A year without weave or braids! Say whatttt? A black girl’s survival guide!

Let me start with a hair update! Just to bring y’all to speed

My hair is all natural now! BC on the 23rd of Dec 2011. Growth has been amazing! When stretched out, my hair reaches my shoulders!! I also had the hair colour I always wanted! The thickness I have dreamed of, so now why this DRASTIC plan for 2013?

Well for starters, because I was sooo focused on growing my hair, I didn’t allow time for it to breath. The times I let it rest in between my braids was not enough. I mean really, the next morning after I had taken my braids out, washed and conditioned and blow dry THEN more braids! I knew it wasn’t good for my hair but add that to the weather and working and uni, there was little time for twist outs, braid outs etc. even wearing my lace front was not an option!

PROBLEM

So, it’s a new year, and I’m standing in front of the mirror examining my hair. I realise the hustle I went through to grow my edges out (which broke because of relaxing and excessive braiding) has started to break once again! Plus the texture of my hair felt different: it was dry and brittle! Lifeless literally! The ends were too dry. My colour has faded.  And I can’t style it properly because there was no way I was walking out the door with damaged hair! I decided to go natural to have healthy hair, not a new case of hair problems!

SOLUTION

I grabbed a pair of scissors and BC’ed again! I think I cut of a good 4 inches off. I then decided to go a year without braids or weaves just wearing my lace front (I don’t glue it down so it won’t be a problem) so I can take care of my hair. And yes I still have uni and work but standing in that mirror, looking at my hair really made me commit to this. So my survival guide is in full effect I made a few changes to my hair routine and I’m already seeing the benefits!

  • About a year ago, I bought my Malaysian lace front from eBay. Now because I didn’t really know how to take care of the hair properly, I didn’t show it much love lool. Seriously! I slept with it on( and you can do that but trust me you don’t want to! Unless it’s glued on). However now that I know I’m going to be wearing it most of this year, I started to take it down every night, braid and leave it on my wig head. I also co wash the hair weekly to get rid of product build up and deep condition fortnightly. The results are phenomenal! The hair is soft, shiny and easier to style and handle! Bless people think its new extensions lool
  • I also applied the same process to my hair. Co-wash weekly and deep condition. Apply Shea butter and coconut oil daily to my hair before my lace front
  • I’m also investing in wigs to take me through the year

It’s going to be difficult not braiding my hair for a whole year, probably because of the convenience however I am determined to see this through. Hopefully my hair would heal and I would get the full results of why I went naturally in the first place!

Much love! Mwah..xx

Thank you for another informative website. Where else could I get that kind of information written in such a perfect way? I have a project that I am just now working on, and I’ve been on the look out for such information.

How does applying the lace front work without glue? The hairline looks natural on you. Do you just blend with makeup? Also, random Q: do you break out along your hairline due to the lace? I’m thinking about getting one for the first time.

        Thanks! :0)

          Hello Anie
I sew elastic bands from ear to ear in the nape area to help the closure lay really flat. Just measure the elastic band from ear to ear in the nape area and substract 2 cm or inches but make sure its nt too tight otherwise headches! Trust me its happened to me lol.. I don’t use any make up to blend and i dont break out. I make my wigs myself… Hope this helps :)..
